Policy Recommendations

The policy recommendations included in this wiki were developed based on a review of best practices in US states. The review primarily included state law rather than policy or practice. Identified best practices were compared to existing Michigan law. The comparison includes strengths and weaknesses of Michigan law, as well as recommendations for greater protections for Michigan's children.

In addition to policy recommendations in each of the chapters, more fundamental chemicals policy reform will be necessary to address many of the issues identified in the wiki. A broad-based coalition of NGO's, health professional and health affected groups, labor unions and environmental organizations is advocating strong reforms to the Toxic Substances Control Act, the only major environmental statute that has not been reauthorized. Passed in 1976, the law is widely held to be ineffective, denying critical tools to federal regulators to protect health and the environment.
